History: Luisa Spagnoli is one of the best-known companies in Italy, a leader in the industry and sale of fashion clothing for women.
Its headquarters are in Perugia, and it has a sales network of 140 shops located in the major cities and towns of Italy. Luisa Spagnoli was a very modern woman, endowed with talent, great creativity and intuition. She founded two of the most important companies in Perugia, mainstays of the process of industrialization in the province: Perugina and Luisa Spagnoli. She was fifty years ahead of the evolution of the working woman, not just as a businesswoman but also for having brought women into industry. In 1928 Luisa was the first to introduce the use of angora yarn for knitwear. She began raising a special breed of rabbit at her villa in Perugia, and at the same time built a workshop for the testing of spinning methods, yarns and knit fabrics, obtaining a thin, even yarn that she used to begin making elegant, high quality knitwear. She achieved great success in the fashion world of the time and developed a prosperous business, creating over one hundred jobs. Inheriting his mother’s imagination and creative brilliance, Mario Spagnoli developed the business, rebuilding and enlarging the factory that had been destroyed during the war In September 1944 he resumed production with 250 employees. In 10 years he built up the company’s reputation and prestige on national and international markets, shaping it as a true industry while maintaining the standards of tailor-made quality and design in the manufactured garments.
Mario Spagnoli’s brilliance lies in having given the company its own network of shops selling exclusively Luisa Spagnoli products
The first Luisa Spagnoli shop was opened in Perugia in 1940, followed shortly thereafter by Florence, Rome, Venice, Naples and Milan, bringing the Luisa Spagnoli brand to the most fashionable squares and streets in the major cities and towns in Italy.
Lino Spagnoli took over from his father Mario at the helm of a dynamic, vital company that had wisely diversified both products and raw materials. Gifted with exceptional intuition, such as the ability to foresee market developments and trends and to be one step ahead in carrying out organizational and management changes and innovations, Lino Spagnoli made good use of it and greatly increased the company’s assets.Under his direction, the clothing line that complemented its more traditional knitwear was expanded and the national retail sales network was increased to over 90 shops. By decentralizing production, Lino Spagnoli gave the company flexibility and competitiveness, and by spreading corporate culture and by greatly reducing sales prices, he succeeded in conquering a much wider market.1986 Nicoletta and Mario Spagnoli succeeded their father Lino, and became, respectively, Managing Director and President of a company with excellent economic and financial stability.
Nicoletta Spagnoli, already putting her strong sense of design to use in the company as Collections Manager and subsequently as Product Manager, introduced a new line for a younger clientele, maintaining the same quality-price ratio value and giving special attention to the 'total look', finding and combining all the accessories that complete a garment, always following principles of good taste and quality. Taking charge of Sales Management, Mario Spagnoli set to work on restyling the shop image, renovating them so as to combine both tradition and innovation and to bring the shops in line with the new product image. At the same time he launched a new advertising project with the goal of acquiring a new range of customers.

Ethical trading initiative.

At River Island we work actively with our suppliers and official agencies around the world in safeguarding and improving the rights and working conditions of workers in those factories which supply our products. All of our suppliers are contractually committed to our World Wide Ethical Policy and those that violate the policies as set out in our suppliers manual jeopardise any future relationship and entitle River Island to terminate current contracts. Our World Wide Ethical Policy will continue to form the cornerstone of the way we do business. To support this policy, our buying and technical teams regularly visit our factories throughout the year and actively engage with our manufacturing partners and other key stakeholders in identifying areas for improvement. This process is further backed by continuous and extensive third-party independent auditing by internationally recognised auditing companies. Today our products are manufactured across the globe, in countries with diverse cultures and often with established complex economies. Whilst we acknowledge that there are still issues associated with operating in developing countries, we also recognise that many ethical and trading issues cannot be solved overnight. However, we strongly believe that gradual, sustainable and significant change is an achievable goal and we believe that with a wider collaboration of efforts we can influence change greater than any individual initiatives. In June 2008 River Island became a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI). Established in 1998 the ETI is an alliance of companies, trade union organisations and non-governmental organisations committed to working together to identify and promote good practice in the implementation of codes of labour practice. It is about initiating change and tackling the difficult issues involved in global manufacturing today. The ETI has more than 50 member companies and nearly 38,000 suppliers who collectively employ more than six million workers around the world.
Code of Practice
River Island is firmly committed to the adoption and integration of the ETI Base Code into our World Wide Ethical Policy, throughout our global supply chain and into our core business activities. We feel that by working with the ETI and its other members we will be able to draw on the wider pool of experience which exists in the collective organisation.

The ETI Base Code key principles:
- Employment is freely chosen.
- Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are respected.
- Working conditions are safe and hygienic.
- Child labour shall not be used.
- Living wages are paid.
- Working hours are not excessive.
- No discrimination is practised.
- Regular employment is provided.
- No harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed.
